Food and Science
Put on your mittens or should I say gloves.
Science is confusing, science is tough, science is for nerds, this is what I keep hearing most of the time. Whereas I think science is the magic of nature. Though we can't explain everything that happens in nature, science helps us understand them and keeps us awestruck. Wondering why a person who always talks about food has suddenly started to talk about nature and science. The other day I was watching a video about hacks with food where they show how you can charge your phone with green apples. Hold on, don’t ruin your fruits, it's a cap.
This took me back to my childhood where we lit the light bulb with the help of a potato. My curious self-went and found some more interesting cool science projects and here are a few for you.
The classic old potato light bulb
In our school science books the first experiment we ever did was the potato light bulb experiment. Let's get nostalgic together.
For this experiment we will be needing a couple of potatoes or one big potato cut into two halves, two coins, two nails that are galvanised in Zinc, a few small copper wires, and a small led bulb.
All we need to do is take the wire and wrap them around the coins in the centre. If you are using the protected wires that have rubber around them make sure that the copper part is wrapped not the protected part. Now take the zinc coated nails and tie them to the ends of the copper wire. Now take the potatoes and make small slits so that the coins slip in (not slip out). Now place the coins in the slits on the potatoes and tie the loose ends to the led light. Now take the nails and place one each in the potatoes. Watch the led bulb glow.
Cyanide out of apple seeds
Though this is not an experiment or something sought, all the people who have watched the MOM movie by Sri Devi have already understood what I am talking about.
The apple 🍎 seeds contain a very very small amount of cyanide. If one consumes them in large amounts like say a tablespoon full of apple seeds powder the person might choke himself to death. Ooh, its dark right, here is some less dark fact. Consumption of more than ten grams that is 2tbsps of nutmeg can cause the person a poisoning and leads to seizures and other major problems along with things like hallucination as side effects.
Peanut Dynamite
Here we are not exactly talking about making an explosive, we are just telling you how a nut like peanut can be an important part in making a dynamite. It’s actually the oil that is extracted from peanuts. The oil contains a chemical substance called glycerol which can be turned into nitro - glycerin, and it is one of the basic elements in making a dynamite.
What is the crazy food experiment you have heard or tried?
