Filmy Friday

Friday Films and Food

Friday is film day for majority of India. In South films are considered as a religion and I wouldn't hesitate to say that stars are worshipped. By stars I mean both actors, actresses. Wondering why a food blogger is all of a sudden talking about films and being all filmy? Okay got it recently I have come across some worth watching movies that stole my heart. If you think 'so what? or what's new?' let me tell you I am talking about some south Indian films, no not Hi Nana or Hanuman or Salaar these movies are based on foods or food has a major role in them.

So why the delay just scroll down the article and pick your movie for the day.

Bhama Kalapam (1&2) - Telugu

In the mood for some crime or a thriller movie or series then Bhama Kalapam is a must watch. Bhama Kalapam is a movie that debuted on an OTT platform called Aha staring Priyamani as the lead character and has stolen the hearts of the Telugu audience. Anupama (Priyamani) who is always up for gossip and keeps you entertained and blows your mind with her nosy neighbor character.

Both Bhama Kalapam and Bhama Kalapam 2 are available to watch on AHA. Let me remind you despite a 2-year gap between the films the craze for the sequel hasn't decreased bit. Like the people say good things take time.

Annapornai - The Goddess of Food - Tamil

Annapoorni is a 2023 film that had a theatrical release and then reached the OTT platforms in both Telugu and Tamil languages. This movie has the Nayantara as the lead character - Annapoorni the daughter of a temple chef and makes her journey to become a chef according to her own accord.

Though this film was released on Netflix and ZEE 5 the film was bought down as a legal notice was issued stating that the movie was against ethics as a brahmin girl was learning and cooking non-veg.

I am not sure if this is a justified thing that happed but as per me food doesn't have a race, caste, creed, religion or gender. All that a chef sees is the hungry in the other person.

Going back to some classic good old and must watch movies here are few.

Ustad Hotel - Malayalam

This 2012 released film stars Dulquer Salman and Nitya Menon as the main leads and showcases the journey of an aspiring chef who tries to fulfil his dreams by helping out his grandfather at his hotel after his family denies supporting him.

This film is currently streaming on Hotstar.

Pelli Choopulu - Telugu

A cute business partners to friends to lovers' troop. Yeah, this movie has food in it remember the business partners part.

Pelli Choopulu is a 2016 Telugu movie starring Vijaya Devarakonda and Ritu Varma as the mail leads and shows a beautiful story where Prashanth tries to be a good chef and prove his skills and talent and Chitra wants to become an entrepreneur. This movie is now streaming on SUN NXT.

Heads up people this movie is based on a real couple true story.
